Today, more than ever, schools must be educated regarding the mental health of students and any challenges that they may face when working towards academic and social success. There have been many published evidence based approaches when working with students with anxiety or depression, but there are some disorders that have not had the focus that they deserve and leave school counselors and teachers attempting to navigate through services without a thorough understanding of the needs of the students. Attachment disorders fall into this category, specifically reactive attachment disorder (RAD). â€Å"Unlike many disorders that are proven or presumed to have a genetic, biochemical, or other internal basis, RAD, by definition, is caused by the environment† (Shaw Pdez, 2007, p. 71). One of my goals is to make sure that everything is safe for the children both in-door and out-doors. To accomplish this I check on a daily basis for broken toys and any equipment in the class that is not working. When we go outside to the playground I make sure that all the equipment used is secure and does not have any sharp edges or rusted parts. This is to avoid any lacerations and prevent potential injuries. I also talk with the children about all the safety procedures that need to be obeyed in school. For example, while in the classroom, one of the rules is that children need to respect each other and that no rough play is allowed. Another safety procedure is for the children to learn what to do in the case of emergency. A fire drill is practiced various times during the year so that the children are prepared for any emergency. Healthy Goal : Provide a clean, healthy environment that meets each child’s needs Model and practice healthy habits with my children Teach children about health care and good nutrition Health is a key subject in my class. I first make sure that every day all the tables and chairs are clean. I make sure that the bathroom has toilet paper and soap. We teach the children that they need to wipe their hands with soap and water before they eat and after they come from any outside activity. I also teach the children the importance of being clean, of taking a shower every day, of brushing your teeth, keeping your hands outside of your mouth and also about germs. We also teach them about the consequences that can happen for not keeping a healthy environment. Another key component is the importance of having a balance diet. I teach the kids that the body needs vegetables, greens, cereals and other foods to keep healthy. I teach the children that it is important for them to have fun and do a daily exercise. If any of the children is sick we separate him/ her from the rest of them to avoid contact. We also proceed to contact the nurse to help determine if the child needs to be picked up. If the child is not picked up and has to stay in the classroom we make sure to monitor him during the day, which includes checking for any fatigue, fever or any unusual behavior. Learning Environment: Goals: To provide a wide variety of developmentally appropriate materials to meet the needs and interests of the children To arrange the classroom into learning centers and work with children in individually and in groups Plan different activities so the children can learn and many ways What I think is important for the Learning Environment is an age appropriate and easy to follow routine. In that routine I make sure that it’s interesting for the children, enjoyable, and most importantly that they learn on a daily basis via repetition. The routine starts with the rules of the class which teaches the kids how to respect each other, follow directions and what the teacher expects from them throughout the day. Next, we have a circle time in which we learn the letter of the week, the number of the week and the subject (i. e. Weather or manners). After that we have our center time where the children learn how to take turns, how to share with friends and also encourage them to use proper manners (i. e. saying please, thank you, waiting for your turn). The most important thing for me is my classroom setup. I make sure that everything in the class has a learning purpose involved. For example, I make sure that we have examples of numbers, letters, puzzles and other activities that support the objectives for the week. I believe that the learning environment needs to be entertaining so that the children are not easily distracted. I try to incorporate practical exercises into the teaching environment, like taking the children outside and making them partake in easy experiments. I also like to invite teachers or experts from other classes to make a presentation on different subjects. Physical Goal: Provide a variety of equipment, activities and opportunities to promote physical development To encourage to use both gross and fine motor skills To introduce exercise as a self-esteem builder One of my goals is to have activities planned that will help develop the physical level of the students. Every day, during the morning, we dedicate a five minute period for exercising. In these five minutes the kids are taught the importance of stretching and breathing properly. The students are also taught the importance of eating the right food and doing exercise on a daily basis. I also prepare outside games with the class which involve some level of strategy, team effort, and require physical development. Providing the proper equipment can make free play a very good way to achieve this advancement. Cognitive Goal: Provide opportunities for children to begin to understand cause and effect Create an environment that encourages them to explore, develop confidence and knowledge Encourage children to talk about their experiences I provide different activities to develop different learning styles for the children. The class is divided into different centers. The science center is setup to learn about different subjects such as the life of an animal, how water changes into different forms, and also to learn how stuff works. This science center is done once a week so that the kids are exposed to different areas on a weekly basis. Another center is the building center which is equipped with different types of blocks. The children are asked to use their imagination to create different shapes and use different structures to build houses, rockets and other things. In all these centers we also emphasize that each child needs to respect each other, learn how to take turns, listen to each other and learn how to resolve their own problems. Communication Goals: Provide activities to encourage listening and comprehnsive skills Encourage everyday communication to enhance their vocabulary Listen attentively to children and try to understand them and help them to communicate In my class we teach that communicating with each other is very important. We encourage the child to communicate their feelings and thoughts by different forms of expression. One of the things I like to do in class is practice Show and Tell. This activity is performed on a weekly basis and each child is asked to bring an item from home that is related with the letter of the week. Each child must present to the rest of the class and talk about the item they brought from home. This exercise promotes the children communication skills as they gain confidence in speaking in front of a class and learn to express their thoughts to others. Show and Tell is done on a weekly basis and each child is given asked a set of questions to assist them in the presentation. Another key aspect under communication is to assess the different levels of preparedness between the children and be able to identify if any speech or hearing impairments exist. If any concern is identified these are communicated to the parent for consideration along with a potential solution. Finally, in the classroom, I ensure that most items are properly labeled with both the word and picture of the object. This promotes visual communication and helps retention by association with pictures. Also, a small collection of books is available to the children, from which one is picked on a daily basis to be read as part of the classroom activities. Creativity Goal: To encourage the children to try new different activities To provide opportunities that stimulate children express their creativity To give the children the opportunity to use different materials to express themselves In our class we provide different types of toys to promote children creativity. We have an area designated as the art space where the children are allowed to use materials such as paintbrushes, glue, stickers and coloring paint. The children use these materials to make different projects that are later sent back to the parents and/ or displayed in the classroom. In the different projects the children are taught various techniques for coloring, cutting and putting stuff together. Once these techniques are taught, the children are left with an open canvass to use their creativity to create something. We also have a monthly family project, which is sent home to the family and requires the participation of all to complete. This promotes creativity outside the workplace and helps associate and attract school activity with the family. Another method used to promote creativity is teaching children alternative solution techniques to a single problem. The children are presented with a simple problem that could have many solutions and are asked to explain how they would resolve each problem. They are also asked to complete unfinished sentences or stories with the use of their imagination. To accomplish a round table is setup in form of a dialogue in which the kids are asked to provide their opinion on how a story should end or to fill in the blank by saying what best completes an idea. Self Goal: To encourage the children to practice self-help skills To treat each child as an individual to know his/her own strengths Provide physical and emotional security for each child and help them accept and take pride in himself or herself In class we spend some time talking about each one of the children so that they first get to know each other and help them understand that they are all unique and different. We like to emphasize the positive qualities of each child and make them known to the rest of the class so that they all feel special and part of the class. In one of the walls in the class we have a picture of the child family and we ask each child to tell us about the picture and what is special about their family. We consistently praise the children for work done on their own and promote and environment where they are able to accomplish things by themselves. For example, the water fountain, cubbies and different resources are all set at their height so that they are able to perform simple tasks on their own. Finally, all good deeds are strongly praised, which promotes a healthy social environment and the desire of the class to do positive works. The good behavior is rewarded with a weekly treasure chest, in which the kids have the opportunity to pick an item from the chest and show it to the rest of the class. As a teacher, we remind them why they are going to the treasure chest and tell them to keep up the good work. Social Goal: To help each child to feel accepted in the group. To encourage children to express their feelings To encourage children to comfort and help one another At our school it is important for children to learn to get along with each other and also with the teachers and with students from other grades. This type of development starts with example from the teachers in the class. Each teacher is treated with respect and no arguing, yelling or discussions are accepted in front of the children. We also make sure that everyone gets along with each other by making the children talk and interact amongst them, weather this be inside or outside the classroom. Games are setup so that participation of all children is required and all opinions and ideas are respected. We encourage the proper behavior in class by having a daily reward chart, where the child is awarded a daily sticker for good behavior. We also have the class rules on the board, along with the consequences, which are read every day to remind the children of the behavior that is expected. Some of the rules are no yelling, no hitting, no fighting and no arguments. If an argument arises between two children, then these are immediately separated and a conversation is promoted between them with the teacher as a mediator. The ultimate goal is to have them learn to respect each other and teach them to get along. During the week we also talk about different types of feelings, such as mad, glad and sad and what are the things to do if you find yourself with a bad feeling. The children are also observed to see any signs of depression or anger that might require additional expert assistance. Guidance Goals: To build a trusting and comforting relationship with each child To encourage children to solve their own differences To provide a learning environment with appropriate and acceptable behaviors as individuals and as a group One of the key aspects in guidance is that both the child and the parent know what is the lesson plan and activities that will be done on a daily and weekly basis. A schedule is sent out to the parents so that they are aware of the activities done and so that they can reinforce the lessons learned at home. The children are also told on a daily basis what the schedule of the day will be and what are the expected learning outcomes from the different activities. The schedules are planned to be part of a routine, so that the child feels comfortable with the class setting and can adapt to the different methods used. For example, a daily song might be sung about the alphabet, which later might be followed by a story, and finally a time for centers is allowed. Guidance also is taught in order to resolve different practical exercise’s and even conflicts. In class, children are guided and suggested to provide answers in order to start developing their own thought process. Also, guidance is taught by preparing step by step process for the different activities that the children can easily follow. Repetition of directions is key at this age so that the kids learn what is expected from them when preparing different projects or assingments. Families Goal: To maintain an open, friendly and cooperative relationship with each child’s family To establish opportunities for parents, and family members to be involve in the children activities It is important for us to have a good relationship with each parent. At the beginning of the year we start with an open house, before classes officially start, so that the parents can see where the child will be attending and so that they are familiarized with the classroom setting. We provide all the information required to the parent like the schedule of daily activities for the week. We hold three mandatory conferences during the year (one each trimester) to provide the parent feedback on the child development. In these conferences we discuss the child’s development, strengths and address any areas of concern. I give my information to the parents so that they can contact me with any concerns or if they require any information regarding the school activity. Parents are welcomed to volunteer during the year and are signed up to participate in different activities. We also have different programs that parents are welcomed to join and participate. For example, the thanksgiving lunch, the Christmas show and other events. In the child’s birthday the parents are welcomed to partake in that day and share with the child the day in class. I believe that the children education is a joint effort between the teacher and the child’s family. We always maintain confidentiality about children and their family. All records are kept in the school office and off limits except to authorized staff and management. We are always conscience of any issues in the family that maybe affecting the child’s behavior at school. We promote communication and offer assistance to any family going through any difficulty. Family projects are planned during the year so that both the child and the family partake and share the activity. This promotes and involves the parent into the child’s work and helps them also assess the strengths and weakness of each children. It also helps combine and reinforce the teaching done at school back to the home. Program Management Goal: To establish a clear understanding of the program To implement procedures to help children to make a smooth transition from one group to another We start with the curriculum called the Letter People that is really good for the pre-k age. The curriculum teaches the children the letter of the week using different themes an styles. In class we get together with all the grade level teachers on a weekly basis to put together the curriculum for the following week. In this age it is very important to have a cutting, paste and tracing activity every week to promote motor skills in each child. What I like about these meetings is that we share best practices and ways to implement new teaching methods that each teacher has experienced. All projects are planned ahead of time to ensure that all materials are available and that each child understands perfectly what to do. The classroom setup is changed each quarter to keep it interesting for the children. The changes revolve around the different holidays or seasons in the year. We also plan so that one week in a two month period is dedicated to reviewing previous material and to reinforce any problems that the class or student might have (Practicing a letter or number). All of the children documentation is kept up to date. This includes all medical forms, parent- teacher meetings and any other document related to the children education. The office also keeps us informed of any changes to a particular procedure or if a new responsibility is required. I understand that not all children learn the same and that is why we separate them into different groups according to a continuous assessment of their learning. Children that have mastered learning quicker and put in different groups than those that are still learning a skill. This allows to separate any issues and help keep all of the class motivated at each children own developmental speed. Professionalism Goal: To continue my education in the early childhood field To ensure a well-run, program responsive to participants needs To be a competent organizer, planner, record keeper, and a cooperative co-worker There are many ways in which I show my professionalism. I really enjoy working with children so I always demonstrate a positive attitude in the class. I try to always be involved in every activity even if it’s a mess one. I talk to the teachers about different topics and I try to listen to them and give my best to each one of them. I also have three children at home and I try to treat the students the same way as I treat my kids, which is the uttermost respect, love and care. As a professional continue to participate in any training that the school offers so that I can bring the latest techniques and methods back to the classroom. Also, as a professional I strive to have work prepared for each class with examples and different teaching methods. I also make an effort to understand each child’s strength and see what the areas of greatest opportunity are for each child. In my lessons plan every week I try new learning activities and methods. I encourage the child to explore each learning center in the classroom. Our centers are manipulative, science, blocks, art and computers that the children rotate during the week. We have jobs assigned to the children each week like the calendar helper, the teacher helper, door holder and line leader. All children will have the opportunity to have each of the jobs during the year. A lesson plan will be post to the parents to be viewed each week. At the end of the day there is a daily event note posted on the door to let each parent view what was the activity of the day.

Othello And Iago Evilness There are evil people in this world; greedy, manipulative, overbearing and jealous. Iago, in William Shakespeare's Othello, is an evil, malignant character. He uses people's goodness, integrity, and ignorance to get what he wants. When Othello's position is higher through character and status, Iago becomes jealous and decides that Othello must be eliminated. Iago is aware of the jealousy inside himself. Othello is a good man at heart, but is not aware of his evil and jealousy, and therefore will not be able to control it. Iago takes advantage of this and uses Othello's trust to manipulate Othello into revealing his true character. Iago, like any great manipulator, moves indirectly so he is never suspected. He uses Roderigo to get to Cassio, Desdemona, and Othello. Once the peace is disrupted, Iago moves directly to Othello. Everyone trusts Iago and believes that he is trying to do the best for them. Iago uses Roderigo to get Cassio in trouble with Othello. Since Roderigo is in love with Desdemona, "I confess it is my shame to be so found (of Desdemona)"(Act 1. Sc 3. Ln 360), Iago tells Roderigo that Cassio is in love with her and she in love with Cassio. "Desdemona is directly in love with him."(Act2. Sc1. Ln240) This upsets Roderigo and he is more prone to fight Cassio when told by Iago to do so. Roderigo does not just have Othello to compete with anymore; he has Cassio as well. Iago tells Roderigo that he can win Desdemona from Cassio by fighting and from Othello by following her to Cyprus. So Roderigo listens to and trusts the man, fights Cassio, sells his land and brings Iago to Cyprus. After the fight Cassio is dismissed from his office by Othello. Iago wins. Cassio is in trouble, is no longer Othello's lieutenant and Iago is in Cyprus with Othello. He then moves in on Cassio. Cassio is another step closer for Iago's plan to cause Othello's demise. Iago convinces Cassio to ask Desdemona, Othello's wife, to help in reinstating him. By Cassio asking Desdemona for help, the two have times when they are together, and Desdemona decides to support Cassio. Cassio goes to Desdemona for reinstatement to his lieutenancy because Iago tells him that it is best to not go directly to Othello. "Confess yourself freely to her. Importune her help to put you in your place again."(act2.sc3.ln357). Cassio trusts the "honest Iago" and asked Desdemona for her helped. This will later cause Othello's jealously to escalate. After the fight between Roderigo and Cassio, Othello turns to Iago for help, which Iago gives after a little hesitation. "Honest Iago, that looks dead with grieving, speak. Who began this?" "I do not know...I can not speak any beginning to this peevish odds.... Cassio following him with determined sword to execute him. (Act 2. Sc3. Lns189-243)." Now that Cassio is on Othello's bad side and Iago is on his good side, Iago goes in for "the kill." Othello is being manipulated and lied to by Iago. Iago puts ideas of Cassio's adulterous behavior with Desdemona in Othello's mind, lets it simmer, then backs it up with lies and orchestrates scenarios that look to be the truth. Othello's trust for human kind and good nature proves to be detrimental in this instance and ends in his death. Othello had been the top dog in Venice. He was an honorable black general, frightening, but respected. He had had a wonderful army and loving, beautiful wife, who all followed orders. He had had everything Iago wanted, and Iago hated him for it. " I hate the Moor."(act1.sc3.ln429). At first Iago just wants Cassio's lieutenancy, but when he gets it he goes for Othello, too. Iago uses Othello's superficial goodness to strip him of all his self respect and confidence with his suggestion of Desdemona's betrayal. Othello's goodness is not real integrity and good character. He is fake to himself and to others. Othello touches and deals with everything on a superficial level. He never goes deeply into relationships. Othello is the general of an army; he never really gets to know his soldiers, but is respected by them. His wife, Desdemona, doesn't fall in love with Othello for any sexual reason, but rather for his courage and honesty. Othello's goodness is easier to break because he is not aware of it. In this essay, I aim to compare and contrast Crusoe and Prosperos roles as rulers, specifically focusing on their relationships with others through which their omnipotence is demonstrated. As much as Defoes Robinson Crusoe is a story of survival against all odds and a spiritually fulfilling life lived in solitude, it also makes clear a persons need for society, and in Crusoes case, the need to be a leader within the societal structure of the 17th Century world. Defoe clearly defines Crusoe as ruler of his islands society. However, even before he is shipwrecked, Crusoe exercises power and authority, the tendencies of a ruler, over his fellow men. Most noticeable is Crusoes exploitation of slavery. Slavery was a key component of society within the British Empire and is first found in the novel when Crusoe himself is enslaved, kept by the captain. Upon escaping, Crusoe despite his disgust at his miserable enslavement bends a slave-boy, Xury, to his will by force after briefly considering drowning him. He offers the boy a choice; to either be faithful to him or to be thrown over-board. Crusoes immediate assumption of power over Xury tells us three things about rulers within the social hierarchy that Defoe was a component of. Firstly, due to Xurys foreign descent, Crusoe, an English man, considers himself instantly to be the master. Secondly, Crusoes maturity granted him ownership of the boy despite the fact that they were both slaves. Lastly, Crusoe believed the boy to owe him a life-debt due to Crusoes planning and initiation of their escape. Crusoe goes as far to consider that Xury may not be deserving of such slavery, calling him a better counselor than himself. Further more, Xury notifies Crusoe of, a lance, among the people they spot on their travels. Even though this observation may have prevented a life-threatening situation, Crusoe is proudly omnipotent as never in thought, word or deed gives thanks to Xury; though he recognizes the good advice, and keeps a safe distance. Crusoe, in accustom with his society, treats slaves as little other than possessions, even though a reader would expect sympathy from a man who has experienced slavery first-hand. Even when he is no longer permitted to trade in slaves publicly, he embarks on a secret voyage to kid-nap his equal share of negroes. Defoe presents Crusoe as a man who it seems will go to any extent to greaten his rule over others. He possesses a birth-given right to power in Defoes society, owned by all white, imperialist peoples as well as those with wealth and seniority. Slavery featured no less in the society in which Shakespeare wrote The Tempest, thus it is also found within the play. Just as Crusoe is established by Defoe as a master of others, Shakespeares play features a protagonist, Prospero, possessing two slaves, Caliban and Ariel. Unlike Crusoe and Xury, it is not entirely through saving their lives however, that Prospero becomes a ruler. It is by the use of knowledge and also the art of magic that Prospero acquires, and overpowers, his slaves. Undisputedly, Prospero reigns supreme within the social hierarchy of The Tempest, and although Ariel and Caliban possess a more unique magic then their master, they are in his debt as Xury is in Crusoes and are his slaves until he sees fit to free them. Neither of them are as seemingly content with their enslavement as Defoes Xury is Ariel begs for his freedom, reminding Prospero of the worthy service he has performed, how he has; Told thee no lies, made thee no mistakings, servd Without or grudge, or grumblings. Prosperos response is remarkably similar to one that Crusoe would inevitably give if ever challenged, he reminds Ariel of the way in which he saved and freed him, from what a torment, and more terrible previous master, The foul witch Sycorax. Calibans rebellions are far less pleading and more insulting, cursing Prospero with, wicked dew. Prospero responds with punishment an exertion, demonstration, and reminder of his omnipotent rule causing Caliban to suffer; cramps, side-stiches, that shall pen thy breath up ach pinch more stinging Than bees that made em. Although written a century apart, Shakespeare and Defoes opinions are synonymous. Both believe that power is held by those who free others for their own prosperity, and this exists in both presentations of their ruling protagonists. Crusoes power augments upon being ship-wrecked. He elevates himself from the position of Master to King, even going as far as to recognize the island as his, little kingdom, and his shelter as his, castle, he even administers justice upon the birds who threaten his crop! Although Crusoe is isolated, elements of materialistic society are found in his self-proclaimed wealth, having, two plantations in the island; one my little fortification or tent, and my country habitation. Such is Defoes description of Crusoes surrounding habitat that it seems almost luxurious it is definitely comfortable. However, no matter how Defoe presents Crusoes power and wealth in solitude, the author makes it clear that Crusoes omnipotence is meaningless as he is effectively only ruler of himself. Crusoe recognizes his need for another to represent the lower classes, and/or slavery in his imperialistic empire. He arrogantly fanaticizes that he may be, able to manage one, nay, two or three savages, in, whatever I should direct them. He rationalizes that acquiring such slaves is his, only way to go about an attempt for an escape, but from Defoes previous portrayals of his character specifically his domination of others to fulfill his superciliousness it is obvious to the reader that a slave would only complete his kingdom, giving him subjects to rule over. Fridays arrival upon the island is eagerly and frightfully anticipated by both Crusoe and the reader. Defoe makes it so through Crusoes many years deliberation over the footprint in the sand. In the past, Crusoe has feared sickness and Gods judgment upon his soul, but now he spends years fearing the arrival of men into his domain. It is not only the cannibals weapons he is afraid of for he is armed with seven muskets and made inconspicuous by a self-cultivated forest he fears opposition to his position of authority. Crusoes unjustified fear undermines his position of power as he is aptly armed to tackle anything other than a small, imperialist army. Crusoe has dreamt that a man would come running towards his hideout and that he would take him in and make him his servant. In reality, Crusoes rule falters in his indecision; he procrastinates, not immediately offering Friday safety but instead watching him flee murderous savages. A critic has said that many white-dominated narratives, such as Robinson Crusoe, have shaped the cultures and beliefs of the colonized, placing them at the ultimate mercy of the colonizer. This description exactly matches Defoes creation of Friday and Crusoes relationship and how Defoe depicts Crusoes advantageous use of it to restore his own power and arrogance. Defoe immediately places Crusoe in a position of power over Friday due to the life debt owed by Friday to his new master, similar to Xurys, Calibans, and Ariels situations. When naming the slave, Crusoe chooses the name Friday as a constant reminder of, the day I savd his life. This comparatively effortless saving of Fridays life on Crusoes behalf causes Friday to, set my foot upon his head swearing to be my slave for ever. This is not an image of service; it is undoubtedly one of slavery. More noticeably, Crusoe teaches Friday to call him master before teaching him any other English. Fridays purpose it seems is as little more than reinforcement to Crusoes emerging, omnipotent rule. Crusoes intentions, however, are good, if conceited, as his reaction to Fridays willingness to serve him is: I took him up nd encouraged him all I could. The fact that Friday possesses a faith other than Christianity causes Crusoe to call him a poor savage. True, as Crusoes faith has increased, so has his quality of life, but he dismisses the, brutish and barbarous, savages own beliefs, referring to his kind as blinded, ignorant pagans. Many aspects of Crusoe, beside his language and religion are utterly alien to Friday, and Defoe presents these as instilling uncertainty and fear. In reaction to Crusoe shooting a goat with a musket, Friday, came and kneeled down to me o pray me not to kill him. Crusoe, recognizing his fright, chooses to abuse this new found power by loading the gun, and not let him see me do it. Although Defoe describes the events with almost a farcical sense of humor, how it caused confused astonishment, in, the poor creature, the reader is more accustomed to Crusoes mannerisms and recognizes how he is exploiting his omnipotence simply for the fun of terrifying his only human company. Correspondingly, Prospero also possesses knowledge different to the natives he encounters. Similarly to Crusoe, he assumes this knowledge to be entirely superior and this creates distinctive parallels between Crusoe and Friday and Prospero and Caliban. Upon enslaving Caliban, Prospero teaches the spirit his language, in this sense, he strengthens his position as ruler, giving himself the means to converse with Caliban, leading to greater domination and control. It is an entirely selfish act, and Caliban describes his only benefit as the following: You taught me language, and my profit ont Is I know how to curse. Crusoe and Prosperos situations of rule are analogous, although, unlike Crusoes treatment of Friday, Prosperos attitude towards Caliban is cruel. He frequently insults Caliban, calling him; poisonous slave, got by the devil himself. Soon after, he goes even further, calling him, a devil. Caliban, similar to the negroes and savages Defoe describes, is at the bottom of social hierarchy. Unlike Crusoes slaves, however, he is not human, and is therefore considered even lower by his master, functioning to represent native cultures suppressed by European Imperialist societies. Prosperos abuse of Caliban leads to extreme paranoia. The spirit, upon noticing Trinculo, believes he is a spirit sent to torment him. He lies close to the ground, terrified that Trinculo might find him, and when Trinculo begins attempting to speak to Caliban, he apologizes as he would to his ruler, Prospero: Do not torment me prithee: Ill bring my wood home faster. Further more, Caliban and Ariel, like the slaves found in Defoes novel, are natives and it is the white colonialists assumptions that they are masters over them. Calibans claim that the island is his own, by Sycorax my mother, is met with insults from Prospero who calls him a, lying slave, showing 16th Century English societys attitude to foreign slaves, that they are permitted to possess only what is granted to them by their colonizing masters. However, Prosperos words and deeds as ruler over Caliban are not entirely unjustified. Shakespeare reveals that in the past, Caliban attempted to rape Miranda: In mine own cell, till thou didst seek to violate The honour of my child Prosperos insults and treatment of the spirit are consequence of horrific intentions in the past. Further more, Caliban is presented by Shakespeare as a naturally subservient character as shortly after meeting Stephano and Trinculo; he begs to serve them. As a native, he possesses greater knowledge than them, and yet he immediately begins to kneel to him [Stephano], calling him a god. Calibans willingness to serve a new master shows extreme imprudence as Stephano could treat him far worse then his current ruler, Prospero his rationality destroyed by Stephanos celestial liquor. Once again, Caliban is shown to be dominated by those possessing knowledge unknown, or property alien to him. In this sense, Prosperos rule of Caliban is not as imposed as it is sometimes shown, as Caliban naturally conforms to such dominance. Just as Crusoes role as King becomes one of Master with Defoes introduction of Friday; with the arrival of even more people, whom he also rescues from savages, his status of King is restored: My island now peopled, and I thought myself very rich in subjects how like a king I lookd. With his power, and, undoubted right of dominion, Crusoe has found supplementation to his haughtiness, and an almost capitalist existence things worlds away from his previous despair upon being ship wrecked. Crusoes status on the island is elevated even further when he frees the English Captain from the mutineers. At first, the captain believes Crusoe to be a God-sent angel. Upon realizing his mistake, the Captain and his crew choose to serve Crusoe, recognizing him as an English sailor, and calling him Governour. Once again, others feel obliged to serve Crusoe, his omnipotent rule relies on their willingness to repay the debt they owe. In contrast to Friday, his father, and the Spaniard, the Captain as a leader of men himself questions Crusoes authority, challenging Crusoes ownership of members of the mutinous crew. Throughout all the situations in which Defoe places Crusoe as a ruler, no one has ever disagreed with him. It is the pairs striking similarities which cause the Captain to challenge Crusoes rule. They are both English, middle-class, merchant sailors, who, by no fault of their own, have found themselves in situations of grave peril. Unlike the savages, the Captain is not scared by Crusoes weapons. I would even go as far as to suggest that he recognizes Crusoes arrogant manner, as that of 17th Century England. Crusoes restrained anger does little to quell what could be seen as subtle rebellion against his rapidly fading omnipotence, as upon witnessing two prisoners begging the Captain to spare their lives, the Captain pretended to have no power without Crusoe. The Captains authority over his mutinous crew has been restored whereas Crusoes power, over his people, has diminished. With the arrival of others on Prosperos island, the rulers status, opposite to Crusoes, increases. Prospero is in control of everyone who happens to visit, intentionally or otherwise, and he acknowledges this, using it to shape the direction of the play towards his will and overarching aim. Shakespeare presents Prospero less as a character but more as a divine, inventive force behind the plot, the most obvious example of this being his forming of the Tempest. Prosperos role as a director blossoms towards the end of the play. Like Crusoes slaughter of the savages, he exercises judgment upon others, acting Godlike when he prevents Antonio and Sebastian from committing murder he protects the innocent. In a reversal of power, Prospero is even in control of his mutinous brother Antonio. As Prospero explains to Miranda, Antonios actions, and evil nature, forced them to leave Milan, reducing Prospero to (in his own words) an, incapable poor man. Conversely, away from Italy and ship-wrecked on his brothers island, Antonios control is lessened to the same level as his fellow voyagers. Even Alonso, the King of Naples, is powerless when plunged into Prosperos magical domain, shown in his fearful words in Act II, scene iii; O, it is monstrous: monstrous: Methought the bellows spoke, and told me of it, The winds did sing to me: and the thunder (That deep and dreadful organ pipe) pronouncd The name of Prosper. The elaborate and powerful language that Shakespeare uses to describe the Kings fear is reflected in Prosperos own elaborateness as ruler and he simply, but terrifyingly, sums up his position of complete omnipotence in Act IV, scene i: t this hour lies at my mercy all mine enemies: Shortly shall my labors end, and thou Shalt have the air at freedom. Prospero is Shakespeare, in control of the characters lives and ultimately, the plot. In no other Shakespearean play is one single character given such omnipotent rule, and in the Epilogue, Prospero likens himself to a playwright, asking the audience for their applause of his creation: Let your indulgence set me free. In conclusion, both Defoes character Robinson Crusoe and Shakespeares Prospero are at times, if not permanently, omnipotent rulers over their fellows. Prospero differs from Crusoe in his conscious decision to end his rule whereas Crusoe cannot help but leave his subjects on his island to continue his legacy. Both their rules originate and increase due to possession of knowledge alien to the natives they come into contact with, and by saving lives in selfish acts of apparent chivalry. However, the protagonists acts seem more significant, questionable even, to modern audiences and readers, who view the characters as racist or presumptuous when they are merely adhering to the society into which they were created.

Proper sizing of the Anti-Embolism Stockings is necessary so that the patient can enjoy the maximum benefits of the therapeutically treatment (Miller, 2011). Nurses should record the condition of the stocking during each inspection. The stockings should be washed after every 3 days to remove any body secretions. No ointment shall be used; instead, talcum powder should be used. Many times, Anti-Embolism Stockings may be issued to patients without proper analysis and assessment of other conditions that be generated due to the therapeutically use of the Anti-Embolism

Many times it was an illegal immigration. In early 1930s there was a slight drop in the migration. The demand for Mexican laborers again increased after Pearl Harbor. There was an agreement between US and Mexican government for a large number of Mexican laborers. This is known as braceros. During wartime the source of food supply was the Mexican laborers. A professor of Mexican and Latin American politics and economics, Jorge Dominguez Madero states, â€Å"It was Mexicans and Rosie the Riveter who ran the American economy and enabled Amer ican citizens to go to war,† The US growers pressurized to continue the same immigration process even after the end of the war. But there was an acute shortage of the documented or legal laborers, hence the illegal recruitment of Mexican laborers continued. The illegal immigrants became the major support for the US agricultural economy. In 1964 the US government ended the Bracero program and after that the problem of illegal migration started growing. In 1968 the economic condition in Mexico was horrible and it led to the number of undocumented immigration. â€Å"Mexican immigrants became convenient scapegoats for widespread joblessness and budget shortfalls. Pulse diagnosis is the ancient art and science of detecting status of a persons body, mind and spirit. Even at basic levels, the pulse provides immediate and specific information that can help clarify contradictory diagnostic information and symptomology . The pulse can be influenced by factors like age ,in this case the strength and quality of the pulse will decline as a person ages ,or gender , Men are generally stronger on the left and Women are generally stronger on the right. Another factor is the season when you have a more wiry pulse in Spring time ,stronger in the Summer and deeper in the Winter. Tongue and pulse diagnosis are both used to derive a TCM diagnosis for your condition which is used to plan your treatment. Generally the tongue, is much easier to learn and less subjective than pulse diagnosis. It is less meridian specific than the pulse, however, the tongue will show the depth and nature (hot, cold, etc.) of an imbalance and it is less effected by short-term influences such as nervousness. The tongue is also useful as a measurement tool to gauge the progress of a disorder. I believe the TCM is about energy and energy function condition  medicine culture, it is more than construction medicine culture, the pulse diag nosis is a energy feeling diagnosis, no only a position touch feeling diagnosis. In an ideal situation, the pulse is taken in the morning while the person is still calm and rested. In actuality, however, the procedure usually takes place in the clinic during the initial interview. It is important to let patients who have just arrived rest for a while to allow the pulses to settle down. The left wrist corresponds to the heart, liver , and kidney yin .The right wrist gives information about the lungs, spleen , and kidney yang . In clinical practice, we have to always combine the pulse information with the whole picture derived from looking, listening, smelling, and asking. Through this process, traditional Chinese practitioners are able to accurately diagnose the patterns of imbalance in their patients without the help of laboratory tests or expensive diagnostic equipment. To make the patient feel more comfortable when the pulse is being take you must ensure you introduce yourself to the patient, explain the procedure answering any questions they may have, ask for their consent and also make sure they are sitting comfortably, with their arm rested. Sometimes what the patient says contradicts the pulse qualities, in which case the acupuncturist will want to ask more questions to get at the truth. Without the pulse diagnosis he wouldnt have known to ask more questions, to delve deeper, and might have done the wrong treatment. If the patient is taking medication, or just been taking strenuous exercise, pulse taking may not work. If the patient is under the influence of social drugs it may not reveal much. Some patients have arteries that travel on the thu mb side of the radial bone so you cant feel the pulse in the normal position. Some patients have pulses so small (itself a pointer to their health) that they are very hard to take. The  pulse quality often changes within a few seconds of inserting the needle in the right place. As the right treatment progresses, the pulse qualities and strength improve, so that the acupuncturist knows, from pulse diagnosis, that the patient will start feeling better soon. There are three positions a practitioner is looking for, and each position represents a different organ or part of the body. This is the reason we take the pulse on both sides, not just one. By taking the pulse, we can tell if patients eating habits are good, if they have a cold coming on, and if their energy is high or low. We can also take note of how your organs are functioning at that time. The tongue has a special relationship with the Heart, in that the Heart opens to the tongue. The tongue is said to be an offshoot of the Heart, or flowers into the Heart. The tongue, containing water, electrolytes, mucus, and enzymes, is a very sensitive organ and its appearance changes with many physical changes in the body. In Chinese medicine, the tongue is a map of the internal body. Like the face, the tongue is divided into five-element zones that correspond to your internal organ networks. The tongue reading it’s all about finding what areas are stagnated, which need to be nourished, which are getting too much circulation or too little circulation, too much energy or too little, and how to balance out the body so that everything is in harmony. When we use the tongue as a tool for analysis and diagnosis, we are looking at the shape, shadings, markings, wetness, texture and even the way someone sticks out her tongue. Having this knowledge can help describe the current state of a patient health, as well as his or her genetic tendencies. It is a diagnostic technique, and it can reveal an existing disease process and disclose many things about a person on many levels. All the organs and the entire body can be located on specific regions of the tongue. The beauty of tongue diagnosis is in its simplicity and immediacy. Benefits of tongue diagnosis include: assesses a person’s current health condition; informs the practitioner about the underlying cause of disease; is an accurate way of determining what is happening in the digestive system: liver, stomach, spleen, small and large intestines; reveals the stage and progression of a particular illness; reflects the quality of the circulation of blood, bodily fluids and essence; mirrors the condition of the bodily fluids, function of the organs, strengths and depth of the pathogenic factors in the  body; shows the quality of the individual’s energy production. A normal tongue should be pink, muscular without tooth marking or discoloration, and have a very thin clear coating that exhibits proper salivary secretions. Tongue diagnosis is more objective than pulse diagnosis, though pulse diagnosis takes a long time to master, while basic tongue diagnosis can be taught in a short period of time. Before examining the tongue for diagnosis, make sure the patient has not eaten pickles, cayenne pepper, curry and other hot things. They will temporarily turn the tongue red. It takes a few hours for the tongue to get its normal coat back after the person has scraped it as well. And smoking turns the coat yellow. From my personal experience in the clinic I can say it’s common to see thick tongues, purplish tongues, tongues with teeth marks in them and tongues with cracks in various places. I also have noted tongues with coats both white and yellow, sticky and thin. Primarily a preventive discipline, acupuncture, especially through pulse diagnosis, the acupuncturist can detect disturbances in the qi at the earliest possible stage, before disease develops and restores balance through acupuncture treatment and herbs. Grendels Mothers Attack Essay -- Beowulf Grendel Mother Essays

Grendel's Mother's Attack In Beowulf, we see a number of elements throughout the poem. First, we see a pagan warrior society. In this society the relationship between a king and his thanes is key. It is a symbiotic relationship in which the thanes defend the king and his land and fight his wars. In return, the king provides for his men. He offers them such items as mailcoats, swords, helmets, gold rings, mead, beer, shelter and companionship. This society also places great value on kinship. If one's kin is killed, it is the remaining relative's duty to make the killer pay for the death, either with his own life or the payment of wergild (the "man price"). Finally, we see the recurrence of the pagan ideas of fate and courage. Men believe that fate controls their lives. Beowulf constantly tests fate and believes that through courage he can live on in the memory of those who will live after him. In the section of the poem dealing with Grendel's Mother's attack, we see the warriors settling down to sleep in Heorot after the huge celebration of Beowulf's victory over Grendel. They seem unaware of the fact that Grendel has kin who may come to avenge his death. Grendel's mother appears on the scene, snatches a man away and hurries back to the mere. When it is discovered a man is dead, sorrow is renewed. There is no more joy at Heorot, now that the she-monster has sought "payment" for the death of her son. Yet since she and her son are monsters, the thanes feel little sympat...
